Yuとme夢
Yamaguchi, Japan – 2015
As a complete outsider while living in Japan, and trying to ‘connect’ with my surroundings I gravitated towards the architectural structures that existed at the Akiyoshidai International Art Village. Walking between buildings, and through the rooms where I was staying, I grew inspired by the architectural designs of Arata Isozaki. I had never seen the world as an optical illusion before–light and shadow painted triangles, lines, and squares on every corner of each room. Witnessing myself become part of this precise calculation I began to photograph myself interlaced with its geometric perfection, textural shapes, and graphic landscapes; finding my reality slowly becoming, Yume, meaning dream in Japanese– I discovered a true essence of synergy in Japan. This work communicates that my environment, reality, our world is altogether greater than the sum of its parts.
